Verkir eru viðbrögð við áverkum og vara okkur við áverkum á líkamssvæði. Við reynum þá að verja það svæði með því að þrýsta ekki á það eða snerta.

Eftir áverka eða aðgerð eru send boð frá áverka- eða aðgerðasvæðinu til heilans þar sem boðin koma saman og kalla fram verkjatilfinningu. Skynjunin er að hluta vegna boðanna en breytist einnig fyrir tilstuðlan tilfinninga (svo sem kvíða eða ótta), minninga (góðra eða slæmra) og fyrri verkja.

Miklu skiptir að hafa í huga að verkir eru einstaklingsbundnir. Hver og einn finnur verki en enginn annar getur sagt hve slæmir þeir eru eða hverju þeir líkjast.

Verkir eftir skurðaðgerð eru algengir og meiri eftir alvarlegar skurðaðgerðir. Verkirnir líða venjulega hjá á fyrstu fáeinu dögunum eftir aðgerð. Miklu skiptir að skýra út fyrir barni að verkirnir vari ekki lengi og minnki smám saman. Verkir breytast yfir daginn og algengt er að verkirnir verði ágengari við hreyfingu og að vera á hreyfingu. Barn getur verið þjáð í svefni, í hvíld eða við leik. Sum börn gráta undan verkjum eða iða eða grípa um verkjaða svæðið, en aðrir ganga um hljóðir og hafa sig ekki í frammi.

Eðlilegt er að draga athygli frá sársauka og má jafnvel nota sem hluta af verkjastillingu. Miklu skiptir að hjálpa barni bæði við að lýsa tilfinningum sínum og meta verki barna til að beita sem bestri verkjastillingu. Með öðrum orðum þýðir ekkert að leika hetju og kvarta ekki undan sársauka.
